Def Stan 00-970 Design and Airworthiness Requirements for Service Aircraft

The ASSC is working with the MoD to update several parts of Def Stan 00-970, which provides requirements and guidance for the design of aircraft to meet the exacting airworthiness needs for the design of aircraft operated within the UK military environment.

The programme of work will result in a series of proposed amendments to the standard:

  • amendments to Def Stan 00-970 elements which are irrelevant, superseded or obsolete,
  • amendments to Def Stan 00-970 elements resulting from incorporation of a series of suitable civil equivalents.
The programme of work aims to provide further assessment of the feasibility of tailoring civil standards for use in a defence environment whilst considering the military deltas; to be "As Civil as possible, as Military as necessary".

Three sections of Def Stan 00-970 are being examined:
  • Part 1 Section 6 provides design requirements relating to equipment and systems embodied on Combat Aircraft.
    (Examined against EASA CS 25)
  • Part 7 provides design requirements relating to equipment and systems embodied on Rotorcraft.
    (Examined against EASA CS 29)
  • Part 13, Military Common Fit Equipment, provides design requirements for items that are common across most aircraft types.
(Examined against JAR OPS 1 and 3)

Phase 1 of the programme has resulted in the generation of a set of amendments which will be presented to gain endorsement at the earliest opportunity and has identified further sections of Def Stan 00-970 which could benefit from being updated using this methodology.
