MoD Affordable Avionics Strategy Review
Since last years Affordable Avionics (AfAv) workshop, ERA Technology has been involved in a review of the MoD’s AfAv strategy. The review identified a number of activities and work strands that potentially have an impact on the AfAv strategy, including:

Technology Demonstrator Programmes
Standards and interface development
Research into the certification (re-certification) of modular safety critical software and electronic components

A draft version of the findings which provides guidance on implementing the emerging policy has been produced. It focuses on the establishment of management frameworks and the promotion of the adoption of advanced avionics architectures that are both affordable and receptive to technology insertion. The final document will be made available to ASSC members in the near future from this website.

C++ and High Integrity Software Programme
The ASSC is implementing a programme of research, seminars and workshops to assess the opportunities for use of the object-oriented software language, C++, in high-integrity avionics systems.

The programme will draw on the knowledge and experience of commercial developers, academics experts and defence specialists with the a primary objective being the development of strategies, guidelines and standards to provide a template for the acceptable use of C++ in both the military and commercial avionics sectors.

ASSC attends the annual DARP workshop
Every year the Defence and Aerospace Research Partnership (DARP) in High Integrity Real Time Systems (HIRTS) hold a workshop where technical and business experts discuss the challenges that face organisations in commercial and military sectors. This year Kevin Moore and Clive Lee, both of ERA, attended the workshop.

A PowerPoint presentation for the talk can be found on the DARP Website >>>

Kevin gave a talk on the roles and activities of the ASSC. It was very well received by the attendees (who included representatives from BAE SYSTEMS, Rolls-Royce, DERA and the University of York), many of whom expressed an interest in membership.
