Guidance for the Acquisition of Safe and Secure Systems

Safe and Secure Systems

The ASSC has been tasked with producing guidance for IPTs for the establishment and maintenance of Information Assurance for a CIS system, that is, a system which stores, processes and forwards tactical and strategic information, on a defence platform.

The scope of the guidance is the process by which an IPT ensures that the combination of technical security measures and security operating procedures provides the required Information Security (Infosec) and its associated Information Assurance.

The aim of the guidance is twofold:

  • For less experienced IPT members: to digest, or at least address, the full definitive exposition in The Defence Manual of Security, JSP 440, and supporting documentation.
  • For more experienced IPT members: to serve as a reminder of the Information Security and Assurance activities in each phase of a project.

The ASSC guidance will be equally applicable to air, land and sea platforms although developed primarily from the experience of air platform IPTs.
